Facilitation Skills Training

Congratulations to all

During the course of the year nine people from different EVE centres successfully completed the Training in Facilitation Skills course run by Slánú.

This was a pilot course for those who were interested in Peer facilitation of any topic, for example Art, Cooking, Wrap®, butfelt they did not have the skills and / or confidence to facilitate groups.

The course was run in Brú Chaoimhín for three hours per week, over a 10 week period.

Over the 10 weeks some of the content covered included:

  •  What is Facilitation,
  • The Role of the Facilitator,
  • Structure of groups,
  • Managing Groups,
  • Public Speaking,
  • Answering questions
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Evaluations,
  • Structuring and preparing to give a short talk,
  • Facilitation Tools,
  • Practice in presenting to groups.

The course was a mixture of theory and practise which involved a lot of work both individually and in teams. The participants found the course most beneficial, on a personal level as well as a practical skill.

At the end of the course the participants were asked what they had learnt form the course on a personal level, to which they replied:

  •  “People skills, talking in front of people, running meetings”
  • “Answering questions, Gaining confidence, sitting in groups”
  • “Learning to be a good facilitator, sharing, caring and support”
  • “Experience, Confidence”
  • “Listening skills, about brain storms and how to use the flip chart”
  • “Facilitation, presentation, and team work skills”

At the end of the course the participants were asked what they had gotten form the course on a personal level, to which they replied:

  •  “Confidence, friendship, knowledge, talking to new people”
  • “Learning new skills, how to teach other people”

  • “Learnt how to improve my public speaking, reading and presentation skills”
  • “I got to meet new people and got confidence to stand up and talk in front of people”
  • “Practice at facilitation skills”

The course was a success and the participants would recommend it to others.

On foot of the evaluation of this pilot course we are refining course and anticipate running this again in 2014.

Once again congratulations to all.
